I 81,  the Town Class destroyer which served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1940 to 1943.
The St Croix began her life as the USS McCook at Bethlehem Steel Company on September 11, 1918. She was launched on January 31, 1919 by Mrs. Henry C Dinger  and commissioned into the US Navy on April 30, 1919.
Shortly after the end of WW I, on June 30, 1922 she decommissioned into the Atlantic Fleet reserve. With war looming she recommissioned on December 18, 1939. As part of Lend Lease program she was to be transferred to the Royal Navy. Due to manpower shortages she was transferred and commissioned into the Royal Canadian Navy in September 1940. She was part of the Newfoundland Escort Force on convoy escorts between Newfoundland and Reykjavik, Iceland. On July 24, 1942 she sank U-90 and on May 4, 1943 she assisted HMCS Shediac in sinking U-87. On September 20, 1943 while escorting Convoy ON. 202 she was torpedoes by U-305, being on of the first victims of the acoustic Gnat torpedoes. Five officers and 76 ratings were rescued by HMS Itchen which was tragically sank by U-666 several days later. Her name survived as one of the Restigouche Class Destroyer Escorts DDE 256.
