    Description

You are bidding on an 8 x 10 black and white photograph of HMCS Gatineau  H 61 ( ex HMS Express ) RN E Class Destroyer which served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1943 to 1946.
The Gatineau began her life at HMS Express on March 23, 1933 at the Swan Hunter Wingham Richardson ship yards. She was launched on May 29, 1934 , and commissioned into the Royal Navy, at Chatham  on November 6, 1934.
Pre WWII she was converted to a destroyer-minelayer and participated in several minelaying missions in early WWII. She was one of the first and the last ships at the Dunkirk evacuation and despite being bombed safely rescued over 2800 troops. She transported the Duke and Duchess of Windsor to Cherbourg, had her bow blown off by a mine, and rescued survivors from the HMS Repulse and Prince of Wales. Transferred to the RCN in June of 1943 she had a distinguished career with that service which included an assist in the sinking of U-744 in March of 1944. She was paid off at war’s end and finally broken up at Vancouver in 1955.
Her proud name was revived as an Improved Restigouche Class destroyer escort, Gatineau DDE 236.
The photograph is an undated black and white which shows an overhead overall waterline starboard beam view.
Item two is an 8 x 10 black and white statistics sheet showing the  RCN ships badge general characteristics, RCN motto & callsign, trivia and the ensigns she proudly flew.
