Description
You are bidding on an 8 x 10 black and white photograph of HMCS Algonquin R17, the United Kingdom V Class Destroyer which served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1944 to 1970.The Algonquin ,began her life on 08 October 1942 at the venerable John Brown Shipyards as HMS Valentine. She was launched on 02 September 1943 and given outright to Canada and commissioned into the Royal Canadian Navy as HMCS Algonquin on 07 February 1944.
The Algonquin served on convoy duty and fought at Normandy during World War II. At wars end she was paid off to reserve. After a extensive refit and conversion she was recommissioned in 1953 as DDE 224. She served in the Atlantic until 1967 when she was transferred to the Pacific. She paid off on 01 April 1970 and was scrapped in Taiwan the following year.
