    Description

This large six sided brass lantern would have hung outside a Japanese Buddhist temple. We don't know its age but it would have taken many years to acquire this patina. These are lanterns you see hanging on the outside of temples in Kyoto and Nara.
On one side of this lantern is written "Kodai Daimyojin" (close up photo #4) which is  connected to a zen temple in Kyoto named Kodaiji.  There's a small shrine named Ko-inari Daimyojin.
It's 14 1/2 inches tall, 13 inches wide across the top and it weighs 5 1/2 pounds.
