    Description

An antique brass butsudan lantern from Kyoto, Japan.
This was made to be illuminated with an oil wick or candle, before electricity.
Modern Japanese lanterns like this were wired for electricity.
Photos # 9 & 10 show where the small cup for the oil in the lantern is on the bottom.
The top (close up photo # 8) is open to allow heat and smoke to escape.
This is constructed with intricately cut, detailed brass pieces. All riveted together.
The workmanship in this is beautiful. And  . . . it looks like it was never used.
    It's 7 1/4 inches tall and 7 1/4 inches across. (18.5 x 18.5 cm)
